A GIFT FOR THE FIRST TEN READERS by Zakena Plip As established by Raikana, at every four issues the newspaper we make a surprise gift to our readers. The first time, with issue number 4, we gave a magnificent tourist map of the Dome, designed by cartographer Leonardus Talader. The next time, with the issue number 8, we gave a pocket dictionary Klyran-Common. The last gift, with issue number 12, was the G&T Almanac, which contained all the news published up to that time. Now what? For this new issue, the sixteenth, we decided to give a magic book. You heard right ... it is a fork-tale, that is, a story in which it is up to the reader to decide the outcome. The book is titled "Throught the Portal" and thanks to it you can experience firsthand the adventures of those who crossed the portal during the fourth epoch. Be quick to ask for your copy of the newspaper, because the book will be given as a gift only to the first 10 who will ask for the newspaper. If the newspaper will be offered to you before you ask for it, you will not get the gift! INTERVIEW WITH THE TREPOR by Zakena Plip This story I'm about to tell you is unbelievable. Yet, it is absolutely true, at least in regard to the part that I attended. It all started when a veritable procession of peaceful Trepors began to walk Hydlaa day and night; if you have visited the city in recent months, you know what I'm talking about: dozens of trepors that slowly cross the city from north to east, in a continuous stream. If this is not the case, I understand that the news can create you some embarrassment: in fact I think that most of us have never interacted with a Trepor, unless we was looking for a new skin to fit our drum. Every one knows that Trepors are quite intelligent creatures about a meter and a half tall, resembling a spider but with a human face. They are oviparous beasts (among other things their eggs are used in magic) and they are hermaphrodites; that is: capable of reproducing by themself. Since ancient times, the Trepors have always lived in caves, establishing colonies, though for some time now they started to inhabit the surface. Trepors tend to move in small groups, looking for the advantage of the night, when their darkvision allows them to see like at the broad daylight. Now, the thing is: we have always been accustomed to see Trepors as bloodthirsty beasts, hostile and dangerous beings, but this could be slightly inaccurate! To clarify my ideas, I thought it would be better to consult one of the leading experts of the Dome's fauna: Dolnag Riolant, descendant of the outstanding scholar Pabes Riolant, whose books can still be read in Jayose's library. Dolnag has confirmed to me that Trepors are really dangerous and hostile, but only to defend their own lives and, more importantly, their own colony. Dolnag Also Told me that Trepors should be counted among the semi-intelligent creatures, such as the Biorlitrosan or Gobble, since they are able to communicate through a so-called "simple language", that is, a few simple words through which they express their desires and emotions. They are also able to use simple forms of magic, and this says a lot about their mental abilities. Unfortunately Dolnag was not able to help me beyond that, but he pointed me towards one of the few people able to do so: Sindela Lineefer, an adventurer and researcher from the Order of Naturalists, the only person alive that is able to communicate with Trepors in their native language. Regardless of the pleasantries, I went straight to the point and I asked Sindela to try the untried: get an interview with a Trepor! Despite her initial reluctance, the adventuress has agreed to help me, putting one condition: I had to publish the aforementioned interview in its entirety and without cuts. Thanks to her friendships among the members of the Hgzafrr colony, north of Hydlaa, Sindela managed to get an interview with the head of the colony, Xzsrhazf The Silent. Sindela kept her word, and I will do the same; here is the full transcription of the interview, exclusively for the readers of Guilds & Traders Journal. S: "So Xzsrhazf, why they call you 'The Silent'?" X: "..." S: "Well.. ok. I suppose i see why they call you that way... ehmm... anyway: why are you Trepors crossing Hydlaa day and night in these last months?" X: "Trepors migrate. We founding new colony... new colony in the east!" S: "They say you are hostile creatures... what do you think about it?" X: "Xzsrhazf thinks Sindela is weak! You stop say that or we eat you now!" S: "Hey... calm down! Is not me saying those things... X: "We not hostile... we only defend colony! We want peace... we even learn to 'greet', like you do: (Xzsrhazf greets Sindela). See?" S: "But... I don't understand. If you are not hostile to the other races, why don't you try to speak to their leaders and find a way to live in peace?" X: "We live peace, we want peace... but you... you kill we, you steal we eggs, you take we skin, you make we slave! If you not free we brothers in Arena, we never friends." S: "So you want the Trepors colony of the Hydlaa Arena to be freed?" X: "Yes! Free we brothers!" S: "Your words will be heard by many: what do you want to say to all of them?" X: "Trepors thinks you all are weak! Leave us in peace or pay the price. Xzsrhazf The Silent has spoken." THE SHRINKING COOKIES by Zakena Plip It all started with the arrival of that merchant in the Hydlaa Plaza, claiming that he would have astonished and amazed us. He did not had the time to lay his belongings on the table; the guards came and dragged him away for questioning. In few minutes, a decent crowd gathered around his stall. The people wondered what the law could want from a cookie seller... did I mentioned he was a cookie seller? Well, in fact, the only things on his table was a blue bottle and a whole bunch of cookies. Inevitably someone did not resisted and tasted one of the cookies, with the intent to pay the bill when the merchant would return. Gonger, of Bounty Hunters Guild, was among the first to eat the cookies, along with Bonedaf of the Bards Association. No one would expect what happened next... The cookies, apparently normal, were actually imbued with powerful magic; whoever ate even a crumb, shrank to become no bigger than a rat. What to do now? I do not deny that, for a moment, everyone seemed frightened. Fortunately no one lost him/her/kra self in chat. While some ran to warn the guards, others were studying how to return Gonger and the others to the normal stature. It was not difficult to understand, getting there by trial and error, that the blue bottle contained the antidote. After all, the merchant had warned us: he would have astonished and amazed us... not shrunk us to death! In short, the merchant was returning, escorted by Mogrrim the guard. In short, the merchant was returning, escorted by Mogrrim the guard. It turned out his name was Borgha, investigated for charlatanry by the authorities, and for providing false testimony. Despite the chaos of the moment, in which everyone were eager to to have their say (someone has even suggested that the guard should feed the Ulbernauts with those cookies), I managed to transcribe the dialogue that took place between Borgha and Mogrim. M: "Can you give an explanation? You better have one." Borgha sags his shoulders and looks at all his losses. B: "All my wares..." M: "Sir Borgha, you have been given a seal of approval to sell cookies on the plaza. I don't think it concern enchanted cookies. Give me an explanation." B: "Explanation? Are you crazy?" Mogrrim frowns M: "Are you calling an octarchal guard crazy, Sir?" Borgha glares at the guard. B: "You drag me off, I lose my wares and then you want me to explain. I explained to your seperiors. You have more questions? go ask them! you cost me..." Mogrrim smacks his fist on his other hand. M: " Didn't you installed a stall here, for everyone to come and have a go? And you would have make the PAY for that! Didn't you told the it was "safe?" Borgha sighs. You are what i call a charlatan, saying it's safe and turning your hairs blue for three days!" B: "A charlatan? You want to know what I'd call you?" M: "Dare and call me something..." B: "I told your superiors exactly what I had, if it was above your pay grade to know, that's your problem!" M: "One more bad word towards me and you will take my punch in the face! I am very sensible." Mogrrim is serious, though he smiles slightly. B:"Go ahead, lets see what your superiors say, after telling ME it was ok to run my stall... and now , now you threaten me. Wonderful." Borgha puts his hands on his sides. M: "You have been approved to sell "cookies" on the plaza, the document doesn't say "enchanted cookies", it doesn't mention any magical item. I hope I am clear enough! You will have to return to the offices" B: "Well... read closer. If surly does." Borgha looks at the crowd and shakes his head. Mogrrim fronws. M:" Sir Borgha, i don't really like your manner. You will get back to the office and get a new paper to be in order or I swear this punch will reach your face. I don't like disresprect!" Borgha glares at the guard. This affair has raised a fierce debate about the power of octarchal guards, and about which law has been violated by the merchant, but this has not prevented Borgha to be led away from the Hydlaa Plaza. Before they took him away, I asked Mogrim what would happen to him. These were his words: "Oh... we will get him back to the administrative office, where he came from, and he will have to explain the part he missed about the enchantment. It's in their hands now." INVASION MENACE by Leonideus Dietrik I don't know how many of you noticed but about a week ago Yliakum suffered a monster invasion. In fact, during two days, there where several maulberlords inside the Hydlaa Forest and more of them patrolling the roads near Grok Idon's kiosk, in the Bronze Doors Road area. A few days later there were no less than five riverlings halfway to Bronze Doors fortress, far away from their usual lairs. At the time I didn't knew this, but monsters periodically invade our lands and the only way to end the invasion fast is to kill them. Supposedly these invasions happen regularly. While I understand many of you are not up to killing maulberlords, I ask that next time you see a monster acting strange or far out of place, you to act as follows: If you can kill it do so; if not, warn the citizens and summon the warriors. When monsters kill merchant caravans and messengers, even bandits will be hard pressed to earn a living. HARNQUIST ROBBED! by Bonedaf Neruro While dealing with customers at the blacksmith, Harnquist turned his back for only a moment and his coin purse disappeared! Witnesses identified a cloaked dermorian running away with it and summon the guards. Some of Hydlaa's finest, aided by citizen vigilanties, gave chase of the fugitive through alleys to the sewers. I was lucky enough to be on the scene and witnessed the struggle that took place when the group caught up to the criminal. 50 year veteran Guard Mogrrim Longroarv apprehended the thief alongside his officer Reniye. The coin pouch was returned to Harnquist and the criminal behind bars. But wait! I was able to secure an exclusive interview with the suspect, courtesy of the Octarchal Guards. I met him in his cell.... The thief, who goes by "Rhino", came from a line of farmers down on the second level. He told me his story of how a Vigesimi down there sent some "scientists," or otherwise prospecters, to his farmland. They found precious metal ores on his property and seized it for themselves, leaving the poor chap without anything. Rhino came to the Dome because he heard about an organization who is "fighting tyranny" and said it would help with his "situation." He resorted to petty crime to put food in his belly in the meanwhile. He's made many comments of negativity and insults to the government and the guards. Rhino appears to be a very troubled young dermorian. His story is indeed troubling, but is it truthful? Who are these members "fighting tyranny?" And what lies ahead for Hydlaa if these things are true? More to come on this developing story.
